With some 52 miles of waterway and over 400 miles of shoreline in Etowah County, we are blessed with a unique and vital natural resource.
The Coosa River not only provides recreational and economic benefits to our area, it is the primary source of drinking water to the City of Gadsden and many of the surrounding communities.
Working with Keep Etowah Beautiful and the Alabama Power Company, members of the SAP program regularly work to keep our waterways clean.
Each year, inmates of the SAP program spend a week participating in local efforts of Renew Our Rivers.
“We want to do our part to keep Etowah County clean and beautiful,” says Sheriff Entrekin. “I want to encourage everyone to get out and clean up their community. Etowah County is a beautiful place to live. We need to keep it that way.”
Supervised by Special Operations Detail officers and deputies, inmates pick up trash and remove debris from the river banks of the Coosa River.
Renew Our Rivers is an award-winning environmental river cleanup program that began as Renew the Coosa, a vision of Alabama Power employee Gene Phifer.
Now in its 10th year, more than 10 million pounds of trash and debris have been removed from Alabama and Southeast rivers.
