Sheriff Todd Entrekin leads the Etowah County Sheriff's Office (ECSO), a full service law enforcement agency that offers many rewarding career opportunities.

The professional and dedicated staff of almost 250 full-time, part-time, and volunteer deputies and support staff, carry out the constitutional duties in the Office of Sheriff.  ECSO is the largest law enforcement agency in Etowah County and is one of the largest and most progressive sheriff's offices in the State of Alabama.

Qualifications and Requirements

Non-Certified Personnel: Administrative Technician, Accounting Technician, Detention Deputy, Reserve Deputy

 

Residency: Citizen of the United States of America and resident of Etowah County, Alabama

Age Requirement: 19 years old

Education Requirements: Valid high school diploma (additional documentation may be required) or general education development (GED)

Licensure: Valid Alabama driver's license with a good driving history

Physical Qualifications: Good health and physically fit. Must pass a thorough drug screening and medical examination.  Must pass a psychological test (for appropriate positions). No visible tattoos (on face, neck, or below the middle of the bicep).  

Character: Good character and reputation, no felony conviction, no conviction of a misdemeanor involving domestic violence, moral turpitude, perjury, or false statements.  Must be able to take and successfully pass a polygraph examination.  Must be able to successfully pass law enforcement background checks.  If a candidate has been discharged from the military, it must be an honorable discharge.

Positional Requirements: Must be able to communicate both orally and in writing.  Be able to perform the essential functions of the position for which you are applying.


Certified Personnel: Deputy Sheriff, Criminal Investigator

 

Residency: Citizen of the United States of America and resident of Etowah County, Alabama

Licensure: Valid Alabama driver's license with a good driving history

Physical Qualifications: Good health and physically fit to be able to pass the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC) physical agility and ability test.  Must pass a thorough drug screening, medical examination and EKG test.  Must pass a psychological test (for appropriate positions).  No visible tattoos (on face, neck, or below the middle of the bicep).

Character: Good character and reputation, no felony conviction, no conviction of a misdemeanor involving domestic violence, moral turpitude, perjury, or false statements.  Must be able to take and successfully pass a polygraph examination.  Must be able to successfully pass law enforcement background checks.  If a candidate has been discharged from the military, it must be an honorable discharge.

Standards for applicants for certification as a law enforcement officer are required by the APOSTC. 


Benefits and Salary

All Personnel

 

Medical Insurance: Free for employee, Family coverage $45 per week

Dental Insurance: Free for employee, Family coverage $10.92 a month

Life Insurance: Free - $20,000 for employee, $10,000 for spouse, $5,000 for child

Disability Insurance: Long Term Disability is free for employee, Short Term Disability available for purchase

Retirement: 6% for non-certified personnel, 7% for certified personnel.  After 10 years of service, you are vested into the retirement system and may retire after age of 62.

Overtime: Available as needed

Incentive Pay: $600 - up to... based on specialty unit participation, education, and quarterly physical fitness testing

  1. Certified Copy of Birth Certificate - Must be an official birth certificate. A birth certificate given to a mother at the hospital with the doctor's signature and signature of hospital administrator is not acceptable.
  2. Copy of High School Diploma or Alabama approved G.E.D. transcripts or diploma. Out of state G.E.D. requires transcripts.
  3. Copy of College Degree and/or transcript, if applicable. Transcript must accompany the application whether or not an address has been obtained.
  4. Copy of Military discharge, if applicable. If you have served in the Military, you must have a copy of your military discharge. Only honorable discharges will be accepted.
  5. Legible copy of social security card
  6. Copy of valid driver's license
  7. Copies of all past/present marriage licenses, if applicable.
  8. Copies of all divorce final judgments, if applicable.
  9. Copy of adoption or legal name change, if applicable.
  10. Copy of naturalization certificate, if applicable.
  11. Basic Training Certificate (Law Enforcement/Detention/Administration)

Upon completing the application, you must submit your application in person or by mail. No applications will be accepted without ALL supporting documents.
